There are two types of business owners. Those who have to be sitting at their computer for work to move, and those who can hand the work off from a parking lot and walk away.
If you use ChatGPT, you can have your agents do work on your behalf through the ChatGPT desktop app while you're driving via voice, while you're sitting at the park with your kids, while you're at a party. Wherever you are, you can do it remotely.
I set this up from scratch on my Mac and my iPhone, and it works on Android too. Then I used it two ways. First I talked into my phone and let it type the task for me. Then I had a live voice conversation with it while it looked up a tool for a new client, wrote a one-page plan, emailed the brief to me, and texted my mom to ask about school pickup. I never touched my computer.
Here is the whole setup, in the order I did it.
1. What remote access actually gives you
Remote access means the ChatGPT app on your phone can drive the ChatGPT desktop app on your computer. The work runs on the machine sitting at your desk, with your files, your plugins and your logins, while you are somewhere else entirely.
You can also connect it to multiple devices that you have. So if you have five cell phones, you can connect it to five cell phones. In the walkthrough I revoked access to my own phone first so I could set it up from zero alongside you.
One condition carries the whole thing, and I cover it at the end: your computer does have to be open, and it does have to be not sleeping. If you want the broader case for working this way, I wrote about how to run agent work from your phone separately.
2. Turn on Connections in the desktop app
What you will do first is actually go into the ChatGPT desktop app on your computer.
- Toggle the sidebar, then scroll down to the bottom left where you see your name.
- Click Settings.
- On the left-hand side, click Connections.
- If the toggle is off, toggle it on to the right.
- Click Add, the white button in the middle.
If you have not used your ChatGPT desktop agent remotely via your phone yet, you won't see anything here. That is normal. Once you click Add you will see a QR code, and a QR code and Computer toggle. You want to stay on the phone side. This is where your phone comes in.
3. Download the real app, and log in with the same email
First and foremost, make sure that you have the official ChatGPT app downloaded on your phone. Go to the Apple Store or whatever store you have and search for ChatGPT. You see there that it's number one in productivity, and when you click it, it is officially OpenAI.
Be careful here, because there's a lot of copycat ones. If I continue to scroll down, there is one called ChatGPT AI Assistant. You want to be careful for things like that because it could look very similar.
Then sign into the ChatGPT app, and please be sure to use the same email that you are logged into on your ChatGPT desktop app. To check:
- Click the two lines at the top left.
- At the bottom left you'll see Chat, and then you'll see your face, or an icon with the first initial of your first name and the first initial of your last name.
- Click the bubble, and there you'll see the email on the account.
If it was not the one that I was logged into on my desktop application, what I would have to do is scroll all the way down, click Log Out, and then log back in.
4. Pair the phone with the QR code
Now, to connect your remote connection to your agent on your desktop, click the two lines at the top left of the phone app. You may see different things, but you're going to see a list here that's like Images, Library, Projects, Plugins, Scheduled. You may see Remote, you may see Explore, you may see More, but you will eventually see something called Remote on this list. You're going to click that.
Then you get to a screen where it says Get Pairing Code. It says, "I have a QR code." Allow. Then point the phone at the QR code that showed up on the screen of your ChatGPT desktop app.
It says pairing, and then on the screen of my desktop app it says, "You're connected." Click Done. Under Connections in the desktop, it will show that I am connected. It'll show devices that can control your Mac, and then it shows my iPhone.
If it connected but you don't see it on the list yet, all you have to do is click refresh. It may spin for about a minute or two, and then you should see it on the list. Once it's connected, at the top of the phone you'll see Remote with the name of your computer. Your computer does have a name whether you realize it or not. Mine says Shanee's MacBook Pro, and it has a green light which means it's connected.
5. Dictate the task, add context, then walk away
At the bottom right there are two bubbles. There's a bubble to write, where you click the pencil, and I could type. But I could do this one of two ways. I could have it use my voice, where I dictate and it just types.
Here is the real task I dictated into it: "Hey, for our new client that starts tomorrow, I have my first meeting with him at 8:30 in the morning. Look at the instructions for how to retrieve the GoHighLevel API keys, or see if they have an MCP." I know they don't have a Codex plugin, and we're doing his setup tomorrow, and one of the core things we're going to do is improve his baseline operations in GoHighLevel, but we need full access to his GoHighLevel for the agents in the least resistant way possible.
Then I click stop, and it transcribes. Then I could just click enter and it will go and do the things for me.
Now, let's say I didn't have time to come back to this chat later. What I could do is add context: "By the way, I'm on the road. Could you prepare your best plan of action, and can you email the brief to me?" Click stop again, and it just adds to the original one.
Then I make sure that this is on full access, click up, and it will start to work. And I could just walk away, and shortly I will receive an email with the brief, with the plan, with the best solution.
You know that it's working because if I go back to the top left and click the back arrow, I see that it's spinning. If it's spinning, that means that it's working, and you know it's connected because of the green dot at the top.
6. Have a live voice conversation while it works
Let's pretend that, like the other day, I had to do a two-hour drive. I could engage with my ChatGPT agents through my voice. I'm paying attention to the road, but I can engage with the voice. I just click the voice bubble at the bottom right and it connects.
I know for this new client that one of his core systems, which he also uses for his coaching calls, is Loom, and as far as I'm aware Loom does not have an easy plugin. So I asked out loud: "Can you check to see if Loom has an easy plugin into the ChatGPT desktop app? If they don't, see if they have an MCP, see if they have an API key, what their API key capabilities are, what they allow, what the restrictions are, if there's any plan restrictions, and come up with the best plan of action and suggested steps for the implementation call."
It answered, "I'll sort through that and map out a simple plan. I'll verify their API and MCP options and check your agent home base context." I added one more instruction while it worked: make it a one-page brief, and email it to me.
Then it came back with something I did not know. In its words:
I found something important. Atlassian just added official Loom support to Rovo MCP two days ago. It can pull transcripts and other Loom content.
While that was still running, I asked it to text my mom to see if she could do pickup today. It sent, "Mom, can you do pickup today?" and came back with her answer: she said yes. That's also the benefit of having the MacBook Pro, because it's connected to your text messages via iMessage, and the computer you use can do things like text via the remote ChatGPT desktop app connection. I broke that piece down in the Apple Messages setup.
Then: "Brief is sent. I emailed you Loom ChatGPT one-page implementation call brief covering sign-in restrictions, a live test, and a 10-minute troubleshooting cutoff." I asked it to hold while I checked my email, and there it was, along with the other email from the first task. It could actually do things for me without me having to do them at all. If the live voice side is new to you, start with real-time voice.
7. The one setting that decides whether any of this works
One of the things to keep in mind is that when you go to your ChatGPT desktop app, this may be toggled off initially, but you want to keep your computer awake.
If you toggle it on, it'll prevent your computer from sleeping. That is important, because if I leave for three hours and I need some tasks to be done, and I'm trying to tell it through my phone to do a couple of things, and my computer is off or asleep, it's not going to be able to do anything.
Your computer does have to be open, and it does have to be not sleeping.
Here's how to set this up before your next drive:
- Open the ChatGPT desktop app, click your name at the bottom left, go to Settings, then Connections, toggle it on and click Add to generate the QR code.
- Download the official OpenAI ChatGPT app on your phone and confirm the account email matches the one you are logged into on desktop, logging out and back in if it does not.
- In the phone app, open the left-hand menu, click Remote, click Get Pairing Code, allow camera access, and scan the QR code on your computer screen.
- In the same desktop settings, turn on keep your computer awake, and leave the machine open before you walk out the door.
- Dictate one real task into the phone, set it to full access, send it, and check for the spinner and the green dot before you walk away.
As long as that's done and the connection has been established, you can have your agents do work for you from wherever, whenever.
Questions business owners are asking
Does ChatGPT remote access work on Android or only iPhone?
It works on Android too. I set it up on a Mac and an iPhone in the walkthrough, but the pairing flow is the same: you generate the QR code inside Settings and then Connections on the desktop app, and you scan it from the Remote screen in the phone app. The only requirement that changes nothing between platforms is that you must be signed into the same email on both the phone app and the desktop app.
Why can't I find Remote in the ChatGPT phone app?
Click the two lines at the top left of the phone app to open the list. You may see different things there, including Images, Library, Projects, Plugins, Scheduled, Explore or More, but you will eventually see something called Remote on this list. If the paired device still does not appear under Connections on the desktop after pairing, click refresh, and it may spin for about a minute or two before it shows up.
How do I know I downloaded the real ChatGPT app and not a copycat?
Search for ChatGPT in your app store and look at the top result, which is number one in productivity and published by OpenAI. If you keep scrolling you will find copycat listings, including one called ChatGPT AI Assistant, and they can look very similar. Check the publisher name on the listing rather than trusting the icon or the app name.
Does my computer have to stay on for ChatGPT remote to work?
Yes. Your computer does have to be open, and it does have to be not sleeping. Inside the ChatGPT desktop app there is a setting to keep your computer awake, which may be toggled off initially, and turning it on prevents the machine from sleeping. If you leave for three hours and your computer is off or asleep, the agent will not be able to do anything you send from your phone.
Can I connect more than one phone to the same ChatGPT desktop app?
You can connect it to multiple devices that you have. If you have five cell phones, you can connect it to five cell phones, and each one shows up in the Connections list on the desktop under the devices that can control your Mac. You can also revoke access to any individual device from that same screen, which is exactly what I did before recording the setup from scratch.
What kind of work can the agent actually finish while I'm away?
In the video I gave it two real client tasks by voice: research how to retrieve GoHighLevel API keys or find an MCP, and check whether Loom has a plugin, an MCP or an API key with usable capabilities and plan restrictions. It came back with a finding it attributed to Atlassian adding official Loom support to Rovo MCP two days earlier, then emailed me a one-page implementation call brief covering sign-in restrictions, a live test, and a 10-minute troubleshooting cutoff. It also sent a text message through iMessage on the connected Mac while the research was still running.
