How to Check Your ChatGPT Usage Inside the App: The Slash Status Command

Go to a new chat in the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex desktop app, click slash, and type status with no spaces in between. Your weekly usage pops up on the screen.

Here's a really fast way to check your usage inside of the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex desktop app. You're going to go to a new chat, you're going to click slash, you're going to type status with no spaces in between, and then your weekly usage will pop up on the screen.

When I do it, I have 70% left and it resets in two days.

You do have to use these, because they expire. So before you just say, "Hey, I don't have usage," and you click add more to buy, you want to make sure that you don't have resets.

I show the fastest way to check your weekly usage inside the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex desktop app. Watch the full video on YouTube (0:17, published October 3, 2026).

1. Go to a new chat, click slash, and type status with no spaces in between

Go to a new chat. You're going to click slash, you're going to type status with no spaces in between, and then your weekly usage will pop up on the screen.

Another way that you can see your usage inside of the ChatGPT desktop app is you could click slash and then status, and the same command works in the Codex desktop app. When I run it, I have 70% left and it resets in two days.

  • Go to a new chat in the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex desktop app.
  • Click slash.
  • Type status, no spaces in between.
  • Your weekly usage will pop up on the screen.

2. Before you click add more to buy, make sure that you don't have resets

You do have to use these, because they expire. So before you just say, "Hey, I don't have usage," and you click add more to buy, you want to make sure that you don't have resets.

That is the reason the status command is worth two keystrokes. I have 70% left and it resets in two days, so the percentage tells me where I stand and the reset tells me when it starts over.

3. Be very careful with automatic reload, and let Codex use the reset instead

If you're going to do automatic reload, be very careful because it could just charge your credit card or whatever you have on here.

You could also toggle this, and it will allow Codex to use the reset. So if I hit a usage limit, it will automatically roll and use one of these resets.

Checking by hand is the starting point. We build up to a point where we build an agent where every week your token usage will not only be monitored, but certain behavioral changes and certain things that are needed for the token usage to be optimized could be created.

Here's how to check your usage this week:

  1. Go to a new chat in the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex desktop app, click slash, and type status with no spaces in between.
  2. Read the weekly usage that pops up on the screen: how much is left, and when it resets.
  3. Before you just say you don't have usage and click add more to buy, make sure that you don't have resets, because they expire.
  4. If you're going to do automatic reload, be very careful, because it could just charge your credit card or whatever you have on there.
  5. Toggle the setting that will allow Codex to use the reset, so if you hit a usage limit it will automatically roll and use one of these resets.

Two keystrokes tell you where you stand, and knowing where you stand is what keeps you from paying for usage you already have.

Questions business owners are asking

How do I check how much I use an app like ChatGPT?

Inside the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex desktop app, go to a new chat, click slash, and type status with no spaces in between. Your weekly usage pops up on the screen in the chat itself, so you never leave the tool you are working in. It shows how much of your allowance is left and when it resets.

Does the slash status command work in the Codex desktop app too?

Yes. In the video I say the same fast method works inside of the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex desktop app. Go to a new chat, click slash, type status, and your weekly usage will pop up on the screen. It is the same click path in both apps.

Where does the weekly usage reset date show up?

It shows up in the same readout the status command brings back. When I run it, I have 70% left and it resets in two days. That is my account in that moment, so read your own readout for the date that applies to you.

Should I buy more usage when I hit a limit, or turn on automatic reload?

Before you just say, "Hey, I don't have usage," and you click add more to buy, you want to make sure that you don't have resets, because they expire. If you're going to do automatic reload, be very careful, because it could just charge your credit card or whatever you have on there. You could also toggle the setting that will allow Codex to use the reset, so if you hit a usage limit it will automatically roll and use one of these resets.
